Welcome back blog readers, this week let’s talk about the newest season finale of Mythic Quest. This was one of Apple TV’s first successful series, I think it came out right before COVID. It started as a satirical comedy around a successful video game upstart. Most people (me included) were roped in by the cast and creators being the same people who made Always Sunny in Philadelphia. We love to see Rob McElhenney and David Hornsby in new roles.
It was a fun charming show, with the main characters Ian and Poppy leading the development of the world’s most popular game. Ian the creator, Poppy the developer, they made a great team whose conflict made for excellent entertainment. The show was mostly in the “good” territory, with a few episodes branching to great when they do flashbacks to show the brutality of the video game industry. They even were the only show to successfully do a COVID episode without making me want to gouge my eyes out.
The newest season has Poppy pregnant with her overseas boyfriend, and Ian struggling with losing her. They’re a codependent mess, and the whole season is focused around if they’ll leave to do their own things. The rest of the characters kind of just existed, they’re all funny and shout to Danny Pudi – a completely different roll than Abed in community and he kills it. I loved the And Then There Were Nonespinoff episode, it’s one of my favorite TV tropes.
It comes to a head when Poppy and Ian both decide to leave, Ian even encourages Poppy to leave with her boyfriend. It’s a turn for Ian, he always is selfish and never wants Poppy to be anywhere but him. It’s a bit of a character development for him, he finally did what’s in the best interest with someone else. The season ends with them sharing a kiss.
First reaction: puke. The whole dynamic with them was brother/sister, there was a ton of love but no lust between the two. As this scene unfolded, I was saying to myself “please don’t have them kiss” but unfortunately, they went that route. The main characters falling in love is almost always a sign of a show nearing the end. I’m not sure that they have any other storylines, but they will get another season or two out of this.
I still like the show, it’s easy and fun. But the drop off the last few years has been tough, and with season four wrapping up I’m not really sure where they go. Ian and Poppy drama, and Saudi investment money? Real original. We’ll see what happens!
