This Week in TV: Andor Season Two Premier

Welcome back blog readers! I was planning on doing a season finale recap of Righteous Gemstones today, but it turns out the season finale is next week. Instead, I’ll go over one of my favorite Disney + shows, Andor, that just released their first three episodes of season two last week. Andor captivated audiences with its release three years ago. Many including me had it just below The Mandalorian in the pantheon on Disney+ projects, it really is excellent. I also appreciate that they are only doing two seasons. It’d be easy for them to draw it out and coast on their success, so to see them stick to the original vision was a nice change of pace. Andy Serkis’s “One Way Out!” episode of season one remains one of my favorite TV episodes ever, I have no clue how they can ever top that. For those not aware, the story follows Cassian Andor in the events leading up to Rogue One.  Let’s get into!

I’ll recap all three episodes as if they were one to save time. I won’t pretend to have a super in depth understanding of the show. I know Andor is a rebel, I know some people are trying to help him, and I know that some people are trying to stop him. I don’t even really know the character names, l refer to Luthen Rael and Mon Mothma as “Stellan Skarsgard and Genoveve O’Reilly’s characters.”   Andor is stealing a ship from the Empire, we get an awesome scene of him struggling to fly a Tie Fighter and also a great battle scene of him fighting people in the hangar.

He crash lands while trying to meet his rendezvous, he is captured by different rebel group who are confused as to why a guy flying a Tie Fighter is claiming to be a part of the rebellion. I’m not 100% certain who they were, if it was disclosed, I missed it. I try to pay good attention, but the details in this show move fast and it’s hard to confirm everything without looking it up online. Maybe I should have done that before writing this. They clash, and Andor is able to escape with the ship and travel back home.

Meanwhile Luthen and Mon Mothma are working behind the scenes of the rebellion. At least, that’s my understanding. To strenghten their finances, Mon Mothma betrothed her daughter to a powerful Senator. This clearly upsets here, but she makes the sacrifice. This is the part of the show that I understood the least, I know they’re important, but I can’t figure out why or what they’re doing. I’m sure their actions will unfold throughout this season, and we’ll get some more clarity. In the meantime, good to know we have people helping us on the back end. Everyone knows Andor dies at the end of Rogue One, so any information of the rebellion before that is very important as it’s been mostly unexplored in the Star Wars universe.

Andor arrives back home to see the Empire occupying and thwarting his friend’s escape plans. He swoops in with the Tie Fighter to save and rescue them. Not sure where they’re going next, but it seems like he has his guys and his ship. I guess that’s a success. The show is shot in a way that doesn’t make it seem very successful, but I’ll be an optimist and keep the faith.

Not much of a review here, I’m going to re-watch these so I am better prepared for next week’s episode. The show is just shot so well, it’s so easy to fall into the Star Wars trance and miss details they give you. I love the way this is shot, the story is so intriguing, and I cannot wait for next week’s episode. Hope you all enjoyed as well, we’ll follow up in a couple of months to talk about how it ends!
